Why your Wi-Fi is bad in a big house

The usual story goes like this. The internet is fine near the router. It's poor in the primary bedroom. It's unusable in the basement. So you buy a mesh kit, and things improve a bit, and then you buy another node, and things get slightly worse in a way nobody can explain.

The reason is almost never your internet plan, and adding more wireless boxes is frequently what makes it worse.

What actually blocks Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is radio, and radio is stopped by mass. In a typical Calgary home the obstacles are:

  • Distance. Signal falls off quickly, and faster at the higher frequencies that carry the most speed.
  • Floors. Going down through a floor assembly costs far more signal than going across a room. This is why basements are the classic dead zone.
  • What's in the walls. Plumbing, ductwork, and anything metallic. Mechanical rooms and laundry areas are often signal walls.
  • Older construction. In inner-city homes, lath-and-plaster with metal mesh is effectively a radio shield. Newer builds are usually kinder.
  • Low-E windows. The coating that keeps heat in also reflects radio, which is why signal to a detached garage or deck is often worse than the distance suggests.

Why the router in the corner is the problem

Most routers sit wherever the internet enters the house. That's typically a basement corner, or a utility area at one end.

You've then put your only radio at the corner of a three-dimensional space and asked it to cover the whole thing. Half its output goes into the yard. Everything upstairs and at the far end is fighting through floors and walls.

No amount of paying for a faster plan changes that. Your plan determines how much data reaches the router. Wi-Fi determines how much of it reaches you.

Why more mesh nodes can make things worse

Mesh is genuinely useful, and it has a limitation people aren't told about.

A mesh node that isn't wired has to talk to the rest of the network over Wi-Fi — using the same airtime it's trying to serve you with. Every hop costs bandwidth. A node two hops from the router can deliver a fraction of what the router sees, even while your phone shows full bars.

Full bars means "I can hear an access point clearly." It says nothing about whether that access point has a good path back to your internet.

So the pattern of adding another node each time a room is weak eventually produces a network with excellent coverage and disappointing speed — and it's very hard to diagnose from the sofa.

What actually fixes it

Wire the access points. This is the whole answer, and everything else is a workaround. An access point with a cable behind it puts full bandwidth into the room. Two wired access points will outperform five wireless mesh nodes in almost any house.

Mesh kits support wired backhaul too — you don't necessarily need different hardware, just cable to where the nodes already are.

Put them in the right places. Central and high beats cornered and low. Ceiling-mounted in a hallway covers far more than a shelf in a bedroom. One well-placed access point regularly replaces two badly placed ones.

Wire what doesn't move. Televisions, consoles, desktops, printers. Every device you take off Wi-Fi gives airtime back to the ones that actually need it. This alone noticeably improves a congested network.

Check what your router is doing. In a house of any size, an all-in-one modem/router from the provider is usually the weakest link. Separating routing from wireless coverage solves problems people assume need a bigger plan.

If the walls are closed

You have more options than you'd think. Basements with unfinished ceilings are an easy route. Existing coax from an older cable installation can sometimes be repurposed. Attics and soffits reach places you'd assume were impossible.

And you rarely need cable everywhere — usually two or three well-chosen access point positions transform a house, and one of them is often near where the router already is.

The short version

Bad Wi-Fi in a large house is a coverage and backhaul problem, not a bandwidth problem. The fix is fewer, better-placed, wired access points — not more wireless boxes.
